Gladys McCain Baker

SAVANNAH – Gladys McCain Baker, 91, died July 29, 2013.
Born in Bolivar, LA on February 2, 1922, she was the daughter of Amy Edwards and William Edwards McCain. She moved with her family to Madison, FL, where she grew up. She loved to reminisce about her father walking the vast timberlands in his snake boots, about performing on the stage with her friend during reel changes in the local movie theatre, about the joy she had dancing with all the boys, and about swimming in the crystalline Blue Springs.
She attended Florida State College for Women now FSU and Brenau College. She married John Henry Baker, Jr. in 1943 and moved to Savannah where she lived the rest of her life except for the many summers she enjoyed in Highlands, NC with her sister, Hope.
She preferred to be called "Happy". She was always a beautiful, gracious, and generous southern lady. She was a stylish lady who wrote the scripts and narrated the fashion shows for Jake Fine in the 1950's. She was the first Savannah tour guide for Historic Savannah to drive the bus because she was the only one who could drive a stick shift. She was an active member of the Junior League and St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
In addition to her husband, John Henry Baker, Jr., she is survived by her daughter, Amy Edwards Baker, her son, John Henry Baker, III, both of Savannah, and her granddaughter, Daisy Eleanor, of Ohio.
A memorial service will be held Friday, August 2, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. at home, 9962 Whitefield Ave., Montgomery Village, followed by a reception on the bluff.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that remembrances be made to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
